Autumn means harvest and delicious meals prepared with the abundance of local foods that Salt Spring offers. We invite you to join us at two great fundraising events for the Root this month, featuring the former “Galloping Gourmet” Graham Kerr.

On October 22 at 7:30 pm, hear him speak at Art Spring about all things food-related, and his vast career. Mr Kerr has kindly donated copies of his cook book The Gathering Place, which can be purchased at the event for $50, with proceeds going to the Root. Tickets are available at Art Spring/ for $20/$15 members.

Then see Graham Kerr in action on October 23 at 5:30pm, when he will give a special culinary presentation as honorary host of the Harvest Gathering Dinner at the Sailing Club. The 3-course meal with wine pairings will feature local ingredients, made from recipes inspired by Kerr’s recent trip to the Caribbean: Spiced Chard & Shrimp – spicy prawns on a bed of sautéed local chard, with a hint of lemongrass; Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder Frenchie – served with a blend of local red wine, peppers & herbs, accompanied by sweet potatoes and kale; Purple Porridge – a cornmeal pudding parfait with oats, local organic berries & nuts. Tickets are $105 each and can be purchased at Salt Spring Books, cash or cheque only.

The Root is the latest initiative in support of increasing Salt Spring Island’s food resilience and sustainability. The Root will serve as a centre for food education and new ways of supporting our island’s transition from dependence on unsustainable imported foods to greater reliance on food grown right here. The Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust is committed to Salt Spring’s agricultural community, food heritage and future.  The site is located at 189 Beddis Road.
