Host a Gathering Place Dinner

Get involved by hosting and sharing dinner with friends and raise funds for The Root, a new community facility for local food storage, processing, and education.


Your dinner party will provide an opportunity for the local food lovers you know to donate to The Root.


How it Works

Create a dinner party featuring local ingredients – invite guests  and ask them to come with a donation for the SSI Farmland Trust.  The Farmland Trust will issue tax receipts for all donations over $50.

Because the focus is serving local farm fresh food, we aim to kick off dinners starting July 1st and will be wrapping up when the harvest is complete. 

Every Host who registers will be entered in a draw for a $100 gift card for a local farm stand, for a chance to enjoy more local delicacies! The draw will take place on October 30, 2018.

The idea is inspired by Graham Kerr’s Gathering Place cook book and his dinner on Salt Spring last fall. The first 25 to enter will receive a free copy of Graham Kerr’s The Gathering Place cook book.

All registered hosts will receive 10% off certificate for local meat for their dinner at Eat, Drink, Ferment, located at 346 Lower Ganges Road (beside Dagwood’s).

Hosting a Gathering Place Dinner:

Register by sending your name, email and phone number to Milly, or call her at: 250-537-6370. We will send you an invitation template that you may choose to use.

Invite guests and set the date. We suggest a gathering of 6 to 10 total, depending on your favourite dinner party table. Once you have the date set, email Milly to let us know, and we will be in touch with more information.

Host your party, take photos, collect donations. Enjoy your dinner!

Once your event is complete, email Milly with the donation amount and we will arrange pick up. Please email any photos or recipes from your event. With your permission, we may use what you send on social media to encourage others. At this point you will be entered in the draw for a $100 gift card for a local farm stand. The draw will take place on October 30, 2018.

Do you care about making the island more food self-sufficient, so we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with imported food? Would you like to see more jobs in local farm and food businesses? If so, you’ll want to support The Root!

The Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust is currently raising funds to build The Root at 189 Beddis Road. The Farmland Trust is a registered charity whose mandate is to provide land, education, and other programs that promote increased food production and agriculture for the benefit of the community.

The Root is a food facility that will advance food production and sustainability on Salt Spring. The Farmland Trust is ready to begin construction on a new building that is designed to include a licensed teaching and processing kitchen, and temperature-controlled storage for local food and the Seed Bank. The Root is an amazing demonstration of how a community can come together to take climate action by growing, preserving, storing and sharing local food in more sustainable ways!

This means more local food will be available all year round. The certified Food Safe kitchen will be available to farmers and food processors as well as individuals and community organizations. In fact, the Farmland Trust is working with Community Services to advance and support their many food programs for people in our community. Training programs such as chef certification, youth programs on agriculture, as well as agricultural and local food education for the whole community will be provided at The Root. 

Right now only 8% of the food we eat is grown on the island, the goal of the Farmland Trust is to increase this to 25% by 2025.
