The FLT is Hiring a Farm Operations Manager

Position Title: Farm Operations Manager 

Organization: Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust

Location: 2232 Fulford-Ganges Rd

Wage: contract position $30/hr 

Commitment: 10 hrs a week 

Duration: 1 year 

Working Circle: Burgoyne Valley Community Farm

Our organization is transitioning to Sociocracy to govern and manage our work and projects. Each new member of our team will be placed in a working circle of peers. Circles are organized to provide maximum communication, efficiency, and autonomy amongst all members of the organization. An introductory session to the main concepts and practices of sociocracy will be provided to each of our staff and volunteers as part of orientation.


Over the past ten years, the SSI Farmland Trust has contributed to the development of the The Root food hub, and the Burgoyne Valley Community Farm. As we continue to help locals gain access, knowledge, and space to feed themselves, their families, and their neighbors, it is more important than ever to engage our community in this important movement. Each role on our team is central to helping us represent the core of why we do this work each day: our love of food, our love of land, and our love of community.

The FLT is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Farm Manager to join our team. This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about farming and connecting with a diverse and engaged community of growers. As the manager of the Burgoyne Valley Community Farm, you will play a key role in inspiring gardeners and farmers to grow more local food, as well as providing support for the overall operations. The Farm Manager will shadow and work with the FLTs Volunteer Coordinator and other volunteers during the first season to learn the role.


Scope of management responsibilities include overseeing tasks and teams associated with the 60+ acre agricultural lands at the Burgoyne Valley Community Farm.

Maintenance Tasks

  • Familiarity with the Operations, Maintenance & Surveillance Plan and Dam Emergency Plan. This position is listed as the emergency contact person filed with emergency services and the Ministry.

  • Monitor water usage and filing appropriate records to maintain our water license, 

  • Liaise with the joint water license holders and establish a Joint Works Agreement for shared maintenance of water infrastructure.

  • Monitor for rodent damage to the banks of the reservoir and repair / prevent as needed.

  • Monitor water infrastructure to the Community Gardens including Spring reconnection and Fall drainage 

  • Maintain road surface, drainage and vegetation for the main road and parking area. Collaborate with the farmers and Garden Committee to arrange work parties to help with road maintenance as needed.

  • Support the compost toilet development project. Manage porta potty rentals until new facilities are complete. 

Farm Rental Contracts 

  • Maintain a database of rental contracts with commercial users. 

  • Monitor compliance with Farmland Trust Land Use Policies and be fluent with the terms of our policies and rental contracts.

  • Liaise with farmers to discuss concerns and support mutually beneficial relationships.    

  • Complete annual renewal documents and discuss tenant progress towards their Farm Plan. Secure a copy of their annual liability insurance and payment for land rental.

  • Conduct a farm review on the five year anniversary of farm rentals with members of FLT board and/or submit review findings to the Board for approval of ongoing tenancy. 

  • Liaise with new farmland applicants to show available land and provide details of rental agreements and policies. Receive and review with FLT board new applications for land use.


  • Provide oversight for the Community Gardens Committee 

  • Notify farmers of work parties and activities circulated by the Garden Committee 

  • Collaborate with Marketing Circle to provide information on activities and programs at BVCF for the website, social media and newsletters.

  • Provide monthly reports to the FLT board on all aspects of Burgoyne Valley Community Farm. 

  • Liaise with Board members for direction and policy guidance.


  • Passionate about regenerative agriculture and the importance of accessible local food 

  • Relevant experience in farming and irrigation systems  

  • Excellent team worker, communicator and problem solver

  • Experience in project management

  • Competent computer skills to maintain database of farm contracts and reports

  • Willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions 

  • Ability and comfort in the  operation of  farm machinery 

  • Ability to maintain communal areas using hand tools

  • Drivers license and reliable transportation
