Hiring Food Security Assistant


Position Title: Food Security Assistant


Organization: Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust (FLT)


Location: This position operates on two sites which the FLT stewards projects on:

Burgoyne Valley Community Farm- 2232 Fulford-Ganges Rd, Salt Spring Island, V8K 2B6

The Root Food Hub- 189 Beddis Rd, Salt Spring Island, V8K 2J2


Wage: $20/hr 


Duration: 35 hrs/week, 8 weeks


Overview:


The SSI Farmland Trust has been instrumental in various local projects over the past decade, including the development of The Root food hub, and the Burgoyne Valley Community Farm. Our goal is to empower locals with access, knowledge, and space to sustainably feed themselves, their families, and their neighbors. With support of Canada Summer Jobs, we are seeking a youth between 15-30 years old to help support us during our busy summer season as we grow more soil, more food, and more community connections.


Responsibilities:


 Assisting the Burgoyne Community Farm’s Operations Manager

  • Assisting with volunteerism, education, and soil building activities including compost tea management, biochar burns, workshops, and invasive plant removal

  • Brush Cutting and grass trimming 

  • Assisting in building passing lanes


Supporting Burgoyne Valley Community Farm’s strategic farm plan development

  • Environmental Farm Plan Research

  • Assisting with Farm Tax Application


Assisting the Local Food Share Program

  • Hosting weekly gatherings at The Root where local gardeners drop off their extra produce to swap with each other

  • Based on time and interest, possibility to assist with fruit harvesting 

  • Assisting with day to day operations for the Root Food Hub


Qualifications:

  • Between the ages of 15 - 30

  • Enjoys working outside in a communal environment

  • Interested in growing skills in agriculture, non-profits, food security, and community building

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to connect well with others

  • Collaborative team player 

  • Canadian Citizen or permanent resident
