Bring Us Your Apples! Community Juicing at The Root

Updated: Oct 5

Got apples? We’ve got the press.

Apple season is in full swing on Salt Spring, and once again we’re opening up The Root for community juicing days. Bring us the apples from your backyard trees and leave with bottles of your very own fresh-pressed juice.

Our Speidel 90L water-powered apple press makes quick work of the harvest, and our team will be there to guide you through the process from apple to bottle.

How community juicing works

Community juicing takes place at The Root, 189 Beddis Road on scheduled pressing days.

You bring your clean, ripe apples and at least one helper. We provide the equipment and a staff operator, and together we’ll work through the process: cleaning and sanitising the fruit, macerating the apples, loading the mash into the press, pressing, and bottling that beautiful fresh juice.

The press uses water pressure, so there’s no heavy cranking involved — although things can get a little noisy, so ear protection is recommended.

And the transformation is pretty remarkable: as a rough guide, 200 lbs of apples will produce around 45 litres of juice.

Fresh or pasteurized — you choose

You can take your juice home fresh, or, starting in September, choose to have it pasteurized for an additional $0.50 per litre.

If you want your pasteurized juice to be shelf stable, you’ll need to bring your own mason jars with new lids suitable for the process.

Community juicing prices

Bring your own bottles: $2.50/L

That works out to $5 for 2 litres.

Use our 2 L bottles: $6 each

Pasteurization: Add $0.50/L
