Job Title: Executive Director of the Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust Society
Organization Overview:
Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust is a leader in our local agriculture community, dedicated to preserving, promoting, and revitalizing local agriculture. We provide land access, educational opportunities, and resources that support increased local food production and sales on Salt Spring Island. Our mission includes:
- Acquiring, restoring, and maintaining farmland with affordable rental rates- Developing community gardens and the island's first commercial food hub- Offering educational programs on food and farming to foster a sustainable, knowledgeable, and food-secure community
Our team is passionate about sustaining local regenerative agriculture and increasing food sustainability for Salt Spring Island. We are committed to protecting agricultural land for future generations and putting more local food on more Salt Spring Island tables.
Job Summary:
The Executive Director will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to enhance our fundraising capabilities, ensure sustainability, and prepare the organization for long-term success. This is an emerging role with the goal of transitioning to a full time permanent position as funding develops. This position will be supported by a Grant and Governance Manager and leaders from each of our working committees.
Key Responsibilities:
Fundraising Strategy: Develop a multi-year fundraising plan to be implemented in 2026 that increases annual revenue to meet staffing and programming needs.
Sustainability Planning: Create and implement sustainable staffing models to ensure continuity and growth across all departments.
Organizational Development: Foster a positive organizational culture, and support the continued transition to sociocratic governance model.
Collaboration and Leadership: Work closely with the Grants and Governance Manager and working committee leaders to align efforts and achieve shared goals. Collaborate with the leadership team to prepare the organization for a smooth succession process.
Qualifications:
Education or experience related to: Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Financial Management, or Entrepreneurship
Skills:
- Proven track record in fundraising and strategic planning.- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience with budget management and financial planning.
- Ability to foster collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Experience in sociocracy or democratic decision making is an asset. Sociocracy training will be provided as part of onboarding.
Reporting Structure:
The Executive Director will report directly to the General Circle and Mission Circle. Our organization uses a sociocratic governance system which is a collaborative participatory approach to our work and decision making. This role will be a key support in communication and collaboration between our working circles and the Mission Circle which provides long term and strategic support for the staff and volunteers.
Budget and Timeline:
Hours and Compensation: This position is 30 hours per week at a rate of $35 per hour.
Position Term: The position is funded until December 31, 2025. The fundraising strategies created by the organization in collaboration with this role will include streams of revenue to support this position long term.
Training Period:
A two-week training period is included, during which you will work 15 hours per week. This period is designed to ensure a smooth transition into the role.
