Seaweed Wisdom A Guided Coastal Walk with Elder Della Rice Sylvester (Huyamise')
Join respected Cowichan Elder, ethnobotanist, healer, and knowledge keeper Della Rice Sylvester (Huyamise') for a guided walk along the shoreline exploring the remarkable world of coastal seaweeds.
Beginning at the orchard, we'll walk together to Beddis Beach, where Della will share Cowichan teachings and stories that reveal the deep cultural relationships between people and the sea. Along the way, you'll learn to identify common local seaweeds and discover their many traditional and contemporary uses.
Together we'll explore seaweeds as food, medicine, and natural fertilizer, while discussing their nutritional value, harvesting seasons, preparation, and role in supporting healthy coastal ecosystems. Della will also share protocols for respectful harvesting—how to gather only what is needed, care for these living resources, and understand our responsibilities to the shoreline. This immersive afternoon offers an opportunity to slow down, observe the intertidal world with fresh eyes, and learn from generations of Indigenous knowledge that continues to guide stewardship of these abundant coastal landscapes.
